„Der Bürger als Edelmann“ von Molière • Theater AG des Salier Gymnasium

SAG.A, the Theater-AG of the Salier-Gymnasium Waiblingen, is staging Molière's comedy "The Citizen as Nobleman" from Wednesday, 24 June to Friday, 26 June 2026 at 19:00 in the Kulturhaus Schwanen. The evening is organized by SAG.A in cooperation with the Kulturhaus Schwanen, City of Waiblingen. The production shows with wit, speed and lots of playfulness how ridiculous the desire for social glamor can become - and why this material is still relevant today.

The wealthy bourgeois Monsieur Jourdain throws himself into the world of high society with great ambition but little talent. Driven by the desire to finally appear "distinguished" and gain the desired access to the aristocracy, he takes lessons in dance, music, fencing and philosophy - and in the process steps from one blunder into the next. While he becomes more and more entangled in his aristocratic dreams, the others have long since realized how easily he can be dazzled.

The Marquise Dorimène, whom he is courting, seems within his grasp, as the impoverished nobleman Dorante offers to act as a go-between. But his supposed willingness to help serves the sole purpose of exploiting Monsieur Jourdain's gullibility and paying off his own debts. The situation comes to a head when the simple-minded bourgeois also plans to marry his daughter Lucile to the flattering and calculating Count Dorante - simply because he gives the impression of being of noble birth. But the shrewd servants have long since made their own plans and turn the game of vanities into a highly entertaining finale.

With sharp wit, plenty of situation comedy and surprisingly topical side blows, Molière exposes the ridiculous desire for external splendor - and shows how timeless human vanity can be.
