The mysterious Marietta awakens the painful memories of a man: Paul, who lives in the "dead city" - the place where past and present merge. Torn between his grief for his deceased wife Marie and his obsession with Marietta, Paul increasingly loses touch with reality. He asks himself: "How far should our grief go without uprooting us?" Erich Wolfgang Korngold's score, ripe for film music, delves deep into this world of melancholy and inner turmoil. With opulent sounds and emotional intensity, a gripping drama about love, loss and the abysses of the psyche is created.
