The "Conversations on Masculinity" series, moderated by literary scholar and masculinity researcher Prof. Dr. Toni Tholen, is dedicated to a critical and reflective exchange on gender roles and social change. This year, the event series is taking a new step: for the first time, not only men will be taking part in the discussion, but also a writing couple. The authors Julia Weber and Heinz Helle will jointly focus on the topic of parenthood and how it intersects with their art.

In her award-winning novel "Die Vermengung", Julia Weber addresses existential questions about becoming and being a mother, the search for a balance between one's own needs, artistic creation and care work. She writes against the fear of losing herself, against the feeling of not being able to do justice to anyone and thus enters into a literary confrontation with herself, her characters and the social environment.

Heinz Helle's novel "Waves" reflects the ups and downs of being a father: it tells of exhaustion, excessive demands and social expectations, of a modern father's self-doubt, anger and tender moments. And the desire to shed old role models and try out new ways of living together.

The conversation between Julia Weber and Heinz Helle provides a rare dual perspective on parenthood, partnership and literary work in everyday life: two writers who complement and challenge each other.
In the process, central questions of our WACHEN season come to life:
What social, emotional and creative challenges shape our everyday lives - and how do they become literature?
How can motherhood, fatherhood and artistic self-realization succeed at the same time?
The event will be recorded for the podcast series of the Center for Gender Studies at the University of Hildesheim.
