Halfway up the stairs of life, two friendly couples, firmly in the grip of the absurdities and dreariness of everyday life:
Uwe toils day and night for his own snack bar, his wife Ellen sells beautiful and expensive things in the perfumery.
As a radio presenter, Chris greets listeners early in the morning with his professional good humor, while his partner Katrin handles trucks on the highway.
Work, family, leisure - everything goes its course, they are in the middle of life - and yet they are stuck.
When Ellen and Chris unexpectedly fall in love, the stable steps break and the routines crumble. Feelings are shaken up and the cards are reshuffled.
A story about the unpredictability of life, which tells of the small, subtle moments as well as the big changes, of well-rehearsed everyday routines and tender reveries.
In 2002, the film won the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the Berlinale.
"[...] the surprising thing is that you stay on the ball until the end, that you soon begin to love the characters despite or precisely because of their mediocrity - and at some points even laugh out loud." - Die Welt
"The movie is a session, and it is told so well, so close and warm to people, that it will stay with us for a long time." - FAZ
