Anita G., a young German-Jewish woman from the GDR, flees from the GDR to the West in the 1960s to build a new life for herself. For the first time in her life, she immerses herself in the temptations of capitalist society and quickly succumbs to the influence of Western consumerism. However, she remains constantly on the run in her confrontation with the society she refuses to accept and fails time and again.
Alexander Kluge's 1966 feature film debut ABSCHIED VON GESTERN marked a programmatic break with the cinema conventions of the time and is regarded as a groundbreaking milestone of New German Cinema, one of the first feature films after the Oberhausen Manifesto.
At the Venice Film Festival in 1966, it was the first German film since 1941 to receive an award, winning the Silver Lion along with 7 other awards.
