On the windswept coast of the small Scottish archipelago of Orkney, Rona (Saoirse Ronan) finds herself forced back in with her parents after alcoholism has destroyed her carefree life as a student in London. Being sober is as grueling for Rona as the relentless life on the cold island, but the wilds of nature are as much metaphor as medicine; the harsh, cold, sandy environment feels like healing.

After SYSTEMSPRENGER, Nora Fingscheidt once again proves she has the right cinematic instinct by seamlessly linking form and narrative in an elliptical and largely non-linear narrative in which man and nature are fundamentally one and you can literally taste the salt and feel the wind burning on your skin: clean, gritty, a little painful, absolutely intoxicating. Just what healing feels like.
THE OUTRUN is a tender tale that quietly creeps into the heart.
