Jazz Open 2026: Joshua Redman

Joshua Redman is one of the most renowned and influential jazz saxophonists of his generation. Born in Berekely, California, the son of saxophonist Dewey Redman, he grew up in a musical environment that encompassed jazz, classical, rock, soul and world music. After graduating from Harvard College, he decided to pursue a career in the New York jazz scene and won the Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition in 1991.

Redman has released numerous acclaimed albums as a bandleader, including MoodSwing, Beyond, Back East, Walking Shadows and RoundAgain, and has played in various ensembles such as the SFJAZZ Collective and James Farm. He has worked with leading musicians of his generation including Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride, Brian Blade, Pat Metheny, Joe Lovano and many more.

His playing combines vitruosity, emotional depth and innovation, and he continues to expand his instrumentation on tenor, soprano and alto saxophone. Redman has received multiple Grammy nominations, numerous critics' and readers' awards and has made his mark on the modern jazz scene worldwide both as a solo artist and in collaborations.
