Film series "Seeing history(ies)"

Free film adaptation of Anna Seghers' novel of the same name, in which Christian Petzold relocates the story from 1942 to the present day. The focus is on the young German Georg (Franz Rogowski), who narrowly escapes arrest in Paris and flees to the south of France. Only those who can prove that they will leave are allowed to stay in Marseille. Visas are needed for the possible host countries, transit visas, the rare tickets for the ship passage. Georg remembers Weidel's papers and assumes his identity. He immerses himself in the approximate existence of transit. Refugee conversations in the corridors of the small hotel, the consulates, in the cafés and bars at the harbor. He makes friends with Driss, the son of his comrade Heinz, who died on the run. Why travel on? Can he start a new life elsewhere?

Everything changes when Georg meets the mysterious Marie (Paula Beer) and falls in love with her. Is it devotion or calculation that makes her share her life with the doctor Richard before continuing her journey, while at the same time searching for her husband?

After the screening, there will be an opportunity to discuss the movie.

The series Geschichte(n) sehen approaches the topic of "remembrance culture" with the means of film. It deals with topics such as war, state despotism, discrimination, flight and expulsion or cultural and religious identity. The focus is on feature films that deal with historical events or recent personal and collective experiences.

The film series is a cooperation between the Museumsquartier Osnabrück, Lagerhalle e.V. and Filmfest Osnabrück.
