The collection of the Berlinische Galerie is presented on more than 1000 square meters with around 250 exhibited works from painting, graphics, photography, architecture and the artists' archives.
The tour is a journey through time in Berlin: the German Empire, the Weimar Republic, the National Socialist dictatorship, the new beginning after 1945, the Cold War in the divided city and the alternative concepts of society and life that developed in the shadow of the Wall in East and West. An alternative cultural scene developed in East Berlin from the late 1970s. In West Berlin, the aggressive works of the Neue Wilde attracted renewed international attention to the divided city from the end of the 1970s.
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary, the permanent exhibition presents itself in a new variety: Selected stories tell how and why works ended up in the collection, while some chapters have been completely redesigned. For example, a special room entitled "Hannah Höch - A Homage" invites visitors to encounter the famous Dadaist. Among the 250 or so works on display, you can discover works that have rarely or never been shown before. We also present unjustly forgotten artists and new additions to the collection.
Tactile models, a tactile floor guidance system and a media guide with descriptions of the images and information on how to find your way around enable visitors to experience the art in a variety of ways. This offers blind and visually impaired people barrier-free access to the exhibition.
