It is not surprising that the novel "Mephisto" was not published during the Third Reich. However, it is very surprising that the Federal Republic of Germany, which was founded after the war, did not want to publish the novel and even had it banned by the Federal Constitutional Court in 1971. But the German Democratic Republic also prevented the novel from being published until 1956.

Boris Ben Siegel, founder of Theater Oliv Mannheim; and Petra Weimer, actress from Stuttgart, go on a live search for clues for the audience. They give a voice to the novel, its author, who once studied at the Odenwaldschule, as well as his sister Erika and her former husband Gustaf Gründgens.
