Two first works that made people sit up and take notice at their premieres: With his First Piano Concerto, Ludwig van Beethoven successfully presented himself in Vienna as a piano virtuoso who knew what he was capable of - not only as a pianist but also as a composer. Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 1 also earned him much praise as a pioneering, innovative composer. His symphonic "journeyman's piece" already contains the unmistakable features that would characterize Mahler's later symphonies: emotional extremes, grotesqueness and a fusion of functional and art music. Despite his closeness to his role model Mozart, Beethoven's demanding Piano Concerto No. 1 shows his own creative will: confidently trumpeting, harmonically surprising, but also lyrical, as in the famous slow movement with its freely swinging theme in great serenity. The internationally acclaimed pianist Seong-Jin Cho, one of the most promising pianists of his generation, takes on the role of the self-confident yet profound soloist in Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1.
