Between neon and gray shimmer the many stories about the East with all its contradictions and conflicts. Pop culture tells them - in novels, rap, feature films and podcasts.

In their book "Neon/Grey", historian Anna Lux and cultural scientist Jonas Brückner have compiled these stories and brought them into conversation with one another. It is about freedom and loss, belonging and exclusion, youth in transition, gender relations and rural areas. From different perspectives, they break open the all-too-often all-too-clear narratives of the East and hold them up to scrutiny, the polyphony, the ambivalences and contradictions.

Anna Lux is a historian and deals with the upheaval since 1989/90 and popular historical culture.

Jonas Brückner is a cultural scientist and researches masculinities in the late GDR and pop culture.
