Nick Costley-White is one of the UK's most sought-after jazz guitarists, renowned for his deep understanding of the jazz tradition, virtuoso technique and progressive approach to improvisation. Over the course of his career he has performed with some of the UK's most renowned musicians, delighting audiences in Europe, Asia and Australia.
Costley-White's third album, named after the Portuguese word for "punch" (the drink), is an intoxicating blend of cultural influences, combining the danceable rhythms and playful melodies of Brazil and Cuba with the harmony and swing of American jazz. The seven original pieces on the album "Poncha" showcase the guitarist's melodic and highly rhythmic approach to composition and allow his quartet to interpret his complex compositions with personality and energy.
The linear melodic interplay influenced by musicians like Jacob Do Bandolim and Pixinguinha, the colorful harmonic sensibilities of Costley-White's role models like Joe Henderson, and the adventurous and joyful improvisations from all corners of the ensemble are framed by the rich and playful rhythms and groove of South America.
Costley-White will be joined by three of Europe's most sought-after musicians: Ivo Neame on piano, James Maddren on drums and Phil Donkin on double bass.
An INSEL event. With the kind support of the Friedrich and Hildegard Nettelbeck Foundation.
