From 1938, Walter Redlich is no longer allowed to practise his profession. The Jewish lawyer flees to Kenya, where his wife Jettel, who is also Jewish, reluctantly follows him. Jettel feels first and foremost that she is a German citizen and only then that she belongs to her religion. She cannot imagine that she will be persecuted in her home country - in her eyes, the journey to Africa is a short trip. Instead of the requested icebox, she prefers to pack her china service and a new evening dress. She cannot accept the modest existence in the bush, where her husband works as the manager of a dilapidated farm. Her introverted daughter Regina, on the other hand, really blossoms in a foreign country. She falls under the spell of Africa, learns the language and finds a friend in the local cook Owuor, who introduces her to the secrets of his culture.
