Out of the Box – 75 Jahre Archiv der Akademie der Künste | Führungen

In the organizer's words:

In the field of tension between order and chaos, forgetting and remembering, analog and digital worlds, the archive of the Academy of Arts faces enormous challenges. As a living archive, it is an open place for the exchange of art and science and collaboration between art forms.

To mark its 75th anniversary, an exhibition tells 75 stories about working on memory, about the creation of artistic works, about the structure and organization of cultural knowledge, about transmission and missing pieces. In the age of "alternative facts" and artificial intelligence, the archive is a place of reliable information and authentic sources. At the same time, it is open to new forms of artistic expression, media, storage and communication.

Iconic testimonies such as Walter Benjamin's essay "What is Aura?", love letters by Anna Seghers, Bertolt Brecht's Threepenny Opera, John Heartfield's collages, a diary by Käthe Kollwitz or Mary Wigman's dance notations speak of the aura of objects and the potential of archives to determine the canon for the memory work of future generations.
