PHONOLOGUES: Fury/Femininity

Anger is an emotion that is evaluated very differently in the public sphere - depending on who it is attributed to. While in many contexts it can be read as assertiveness, clarity or strength, it is often more quickly pathologized or morally condemned in FLINTA* people: as "too much", "too loud", "too emotional". It is not uncommon for the perception to tilt towards the pejorative - anger becomes a punch line, a warning sign, a projection surface. The message behind this is clear: certain forms of anger should be visible, others better not.

PHONOLOGUES Fury/Femininity starts right here and focuses on FLINTA* anger as a necessary reaction to be taken seriously. The exhibition does not see anger as a defect, but as a signal: that boundaries have been overstepped, that protection is needed, that something is wrong. Anger can clarify, connect, change - and it can become an expression.

At the heart of the exhibition are authentic voice messages from FLINTA* participants. Raw, direct and unfiltered, these intimate audio recordings open up direct access to what is otherwise often swallowed, relativized or explained away. They make audible how anger is experienced - and how it is expressed, held, hidden or reclaimed.

Based on these voices, six FLINTA artists* have created or curated works that take up, translate and amplify the energy of anger. The contributions show how anger can lead to creativity, resistance and connection - and how a productive force can emerge from an emotion marked as "inappropriate".

Fury/Femininity is the fourth edition of the PHONOLOGUES series, which works with the medium of voice messages to present the lived experiences of FLINTA* people as real, audible perspectives. The aim is to give FLINTA* artists a platform and create spaces in which questions of femininity, identity and expression are not smoothed over, but become visible and negotiable.
