QUEERHISTORYMONTH
QueerHistoryMonth will take place in Hamburg from May 1 to 31, 2026(www.queerhistoryhamburg.de). Various events as part of the festival will bring the history(ies) of the queer community in Hamburg to life. Everyone is welcome - kings, queers, queens, allies, friends, families (of choice) and everyone in between and beyond!
The event
A queer-historical exhibition on transgender history in St. Pauli - personal, moving and multi-layered.
This exhibition accompanies the city tour of the same name and makes a long invisible chapter of Hamburg and St. Pauli history tangible.
The focus is on the life of Julia Böhmer - a story that is representative of many transgender biographies that had to remain hidden for decades. Based on her personal legacy, the exhibition opens up a sensitive and at the same time impressive approach to her everyday life, her memories and her identity.
On display are photographs, texts, figurines and costume jewelry that bear witness to a life lived from the 1950s to the present day. The exhibition is complemented by historical classifications and background information on the queer and trans community in particular, which make social contexts visible and place individual experiences in a larger context.
The exhibition invites you to take a closer look: at the realities of life that have long been overlooked, at places of visibility and retreat - and at the stories that have helped shape our city.
The exhibition was conceived by Eva Decker, who accompanied Julia Böhmer in the last years of her life and was commissioned by her to research her story and make it accessible to the public.
A touching and insightful approach to queer history - personal, historically sound and highly topical.
The exhibition is sponsored by: Lebendiges Kulturerbe St. Pauli e.V.
The exhibition is complemented by an accompanying city tour .
