Son Rompe Pera

In the organizer's words:

The Gama brothers from Naucalpan, a suburb of Mexico City, have completely changed the image of a marimba band with their band Son Rompe Pera. They combine the instrument with punk energy and made their shows famous worldwide for the legendary "marimba moshpit". With two acclaimed albums and performances on major stages, they show how traditions can be honored, broken and rebuilt at the same time.

The band shaped the cumbia punk genre. As children, the brothers played marimba at parties with their father Batuco, but turned to punk as teenagers. They later combined the two to create a danceable mix of cumbia and punk.

After the violent killing of their father in 2016, they almost wanted to stop making music, but an encounter with Chico Trujillo led to their debut album Batuco (2020). During the pandemic, they played community concerts in parks in Mexico City. They then toured internationally, including at the Vive Latino festival.

In 2023, they released their second album Chimborazo, recorded in Bogotá, with original songs and a mix of cumbia, punk, psychedelic guitars and Latin American rhythms. Since then, the band has toured the world, bringing their loud, cross-genre marimba punk to major festival stages.
