Plenty of sunshine - that's what many Leipzig residents have always wanted in the summertime. Finally, the longing for light, air and relaxation is fulfilled. Long days and balmy nights define this special feeling of life between the awakening of spring and the beginning of fall. Summer also means vacation, whether at home or far away. The memories that were once captured on postcards, Super Eight films and video cassettes now fill memory cards and hard drives.
Summer promises breezy, cheerful fashion, ice lollies, barbecues, parties and outdoor concerts. And above all, it promises bathing fun. People have always bathed, whether in the numerous local waters or in natural and open-air pools, some of which have been forgotten today. Swimwear and swimming styles change just as much as outdoor sports.
But this sunny and cheerful view of Leipzig's summer history would only be half the truth. Extreme heat waves, droughts and storms are just as much a part of this time of year and present Leipzig's residents with particular challenges - and the trend is rising. Rethinking urban development and more greenery on squares, building walls and roofs are exemplary instruments for ensuring that the coming summers in Leipzig remain a pleasant and bearable time of year. If this does not succeed, we will all quickly get tired of the summer sun.
And so the exhibition wanders through 400 years of changeable summer feelings - light-footed, but not frivolous. With cheerful, cheerful and memorable objects, it invites you to take a fresh look at this season of love and joie de vivre.
