The Inheritors

Am I a seagull? This film takes us right into the middle of a vast colony of ring-billed gulls. So close to the animals that watching it creates a sense of belonging. Even their variations of screeching sound like speech. The birds are still on the ground, busy brooding and raising chicks, then it's time to show the young the way to the food source. The table is richly laid: Canada's largest garbage dump near Montreal has enabled the ring-billed gull, which was previously almost extinct, to grow into one of the most populous bird species in the world. The human intervention on the unwanted animals in the garbage heaps begins with deterrence and control: the appearance of a falcon. It is to compete against them in the service of order. A camera on the hood of the bird of prey documents the hunt. This film does not explain the relationship between man and "nature". It shows what we have to inherit.
