The film takes us on a historical foray with an observing camera through Hamburg's Gängeviertel district. In 1892, cholera raged in Hamburg and 10,000 Hamburg residents died within six weeks. In his 1987 book 'Death in Hamburg', British historian Richard J. Evans explains why a pandemic of devastating proportions could occur in Hamburg of all places at the end of the 19th century. Following in the footsteps of Evans' study, Klaus Wildenhahn asks the historian associative questions. On a further historical level, the film shows parallels between the city-state of that time, with its slums and the Gängeviertel, and England under Margaret Thatcher.
