THE NIGHTINGALES - post-punk legends live
Emerging from the wreckage of The Prefects, The Nightingales have been one of the most idiosyncratic and uncompromising voices of British post-punk since the late 70s. Frontman Robert Lloyd formed a band out of chaos that never fitted into a pigeonhole - which is precisely why it still enjoys cult status today.
Music journalist John Robb aptly described them as "the outsiders among the outsiders", while radio icon John Peel supported them early on and predicted their timelessness. In the early 80s, The Nightingales delivered a series of singles that were regularly hailed as "Single of the Week" - edgy, clever, unpredictable.
After a hiatus in the late 80s, the band returned in 2004 - and have been more prolific and relevant than ever since. With a current line-up featuring Lloyd, Andreas Schmid (Faust) on bass, drummer Fliss Kitson and guitarist James Smith, The Nightingales unleash a raw, hypnotic energy between post-punk, garage and avant-garde live.
Their work now includes an impressive range of releases - including numerous singles, EPs and studio albums - as well as extensive tours across Europe and the USA. 2019 saw the release of King Rocker, an acclaimed documentary written by Stewart Lee and directed by Michael Cumming, which impressively illuminates the history of this extraordinary band.
Live, The Nightingales are in a class of their own: dryly humorous, biting, minimalist and intense at the same time. Not a retro act, but a band that continues to create its very own present.
Anyone who loves post-punk - or finally wants to really understand it - should not miss this concert.
