Themenabend: Daniel Nicolaus Chodowiecki

On the occasion of Daniel Nicolaus Chodowiecki's 300th birthday, the Kunsthalle Bremen is planning a themed evening with the Friends of the Kupferstichkabinett.

Dr. Maria Aresin, curator for art on paper up to 1800, will present selected works by Chodowiecki from the rich holdings of the artist's prints and drawings in the Kupferstichkabinett of the Kunsthalle Bremen. The focus will be on his marginal ideas (French: remarques), which reveal the humorous nature of the most successful German engraver of the 18th century. Chodowiecki often used the margins of his printing plates for small sketches or commentaries, which were intended to appeal to a particular collector's audience.

In addition to these imaginative etching samples in miniature, the Kunsthalle collection also contains numerous etching and etching samples that show that Chodowiecki was extremely experimental and experimented freely with acids, etching grounds and printing inks. Ultimately, the exhibition will also focus on the relationship between preliminary drawing, proofs and successive states of printing, which can be excellently traced in Chodowiecki's oeuvre.
