From supper to academy evening: -
Historian Mendel and political scientist Cheema in conversation at the Academy
They are known for their column "Muslim-Jewish Evening Meal" in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. On May 4, the prominent couple Meron Mendel and Saba-Nur Cheema will be guests at the Academy. The Jewish historian and the Muslim political scientist stand for a differentiated, dialog-oriented view of the social debates of our time - especially in the context of the Middle East conflict, anti-Semitism, racism and questions of coexistence in a pluralistic society.
Meron Mendel, Director of the Anne Frank Educational Centre in Frankfurt, and Saba-Nur Cheema, long-time Educational Director of the same institution, bring different biographical and professional perspectives: Israeli and Pakistani, Jewish and Muslim socialized, academically grounded and at the same time socially committed. Together, they are committed to a contentious but respectful culture of discussion. Meron Mendel and Saba-Nur Cheema were honored with the Buber-Rosenzweig Medal last year.
The joint discussion at the Academy will focus on the challenges of public debate in polarized times: How can dialog succeed when positions are seemingly irreconcilable? What responsibilities do education, politics and civil society have? And how can empathy and clarity be combined?
