What a match! There is this beautiful place in Jena, an old transformer station for the power supply in the Damenviertel district, which has long since blossomed into a charming innovation laboratory for contemporary art forms. The industrial building and all those who fill it with life stand for transformation. And then there is this composer, producer and multidisciplinary artist, who is one of the most innovative electronic artists from the Netherlands and has a particular fondness for analog synthesizers! It just so happens that he is coming to Jena: TRAFO and LudoWic. If that doesn't fit like a plug and socket?

The tension is quickly explained. Matheus Lodewijk, alias LudoWic, has dug a particularly exotic instrument out of his box and given it a prominent role in his music: the trautonium. Those who are not yet familiar with this venerable predecessor of the modern synthesizer need not fret, as an introduction has now been arranged. The stepless tone generator is considered to be one of the world's first electronic musical instruments. We'll skip over how exactly LudoWic makes the instrument shake. Just this much: resistor wire, strings, capacitor, thyratron tube and formant filter play a role and somehow ignition voltage and oscillation occur later.

The sound is easier to describe than the mechanism: floating, cinematic, almost hypnotic. After a concert by the Dutch artist, guests often report holding their breath and a seemingly endless feeling of falling. How fitting that his new album is called HORIZONTAL FALL and picks up on precisely this moment. After all, it sounds quite desirable to fall all the time without hitting the ground. So we fall horizontally. And as we do so, we experience another phenomenon: his music sounds nostalgic and futuristic at the same time. It combines electronic music, neoclassical, ambient, avant-garde and experimental electronics - transformation at its best.

Lodewijk's successful and award-winning works can not only be found in films, documentary series and special audiovisual projects, but can also be admired in the popular indie video game Katana ZERO. It almost seems as if the artistic vision of this immersive sound creator has spread over us in a wonderful way. Time to fall!
