Black Box № 3 "Midnight in Paris - 8 cellos on a journey through time"

Pure cello ensembles are rare. The cellists of the Jena Philharmonic take advantage of the enormous tonal range of their instrument and form an octet to explore the avant-garde Paris of the fin de siècle and early 20th century. At the center is Gabriel Fauré, whose influence as a teacher and innovator radiated far beyond France. The ensemble interweaves works by his students Maurice Ravel and Jacques Ibert with compositions by tango nuevo inventor Astor Piazzolla and Manuel de Falla, who were influenced by the esprit of the Parisian school. Heitor Villa-Lobos' "Bachianas Brasileiras" No. 1 is one of the few original works to celebrate the cello octet as a powerful, independent genre. /JN
