When Johann Sebastian Bach took up his post as Kapellmeister and chamber music director at the court of Prince Leopold von Anhalt-Köthen in 1717, he also ushered in a new creative phase. Over the next few years, Bach was to achieve epoch-making achievements, particularly in the field of instrumental music. These include the six violin sonatas, in which the violin and harpsichord became equal partners for the first time. With three violin sonatas, two outstanding early music interpreters are now guests in the "Bach at four" series. The celebrated baroque violinist Evgeny Sviridov has long been at home in the Rhineland as concertmaster of Concerto Köln. He will be accompanied by the distinguished harpsichordist Stanislav Gres, whose playing has been awarded important prizes, including at the Leipzig Bach Competition.
