David Bröderbauer: Acker, Baulücke, Deponie

With Under the Milky Way, the Kunstverein is showing abstraction, autonomy and post-vandalic tendencies in contemporary art. How do the wastelands come into play? In the search for untouched nature, it is often overlooked what has sprung from human hands: fallow land is the postscript to all cultivation and at the same time the beginning of wilderness. Their emergence is inextricably linked to the sedentarization of man; it was the separation of cultivated land from wilderness that gave rise to fallow land.

David Bröderbauer has roamed the wasteland in twelve stages: from Vienna's Nordbahn district to the Zollverein colliery, a military training area and a desolate marshland. His wasteland atlas is an invitation to explore the seemingly insignificant space, to appreciate its niche existence and to discover its resistant beauty.

David Bröderbauer is a writer and biologist. He works at the Botanical Garden of the University of Vienna, where he focuses on science communication.

Christoph Platz-Gallus is an art historian, curator and exhibition organizer. He has been Director of the Kunstverein Hannover since 2022.
