»Gefeiert und vergessen?« Allmuth Behrendt & Maximilian Winkler in Lesung und Gespräch

Jewish artists had a decisive influence on the Leipzig opera and music scene before National Socialism. This event combines two newly published books that make their stories visible from different perspectives:

In "Celebrated and forgotten?" (Hentrich & Hentrich 2025), Allmuth Behrendt devotes himself for the first time to the Jewish voices at the Leipzig Opera. In over 120 biographical sketches, a multi-layered picture emerges of those personalities whose formative careers were abruptly ended by persecution.

Maximilian Winkler focuses on Alfred Szendrei, opera conductor, composer and Leipzig radio pioneer (Hentrich & Hentrich 2026). After his emigration, he worked as a cantor and scholar into old age.

Allmuth Behrendt studied musicology and received her doctorate with a dissertation on Heinrich Marschner. She was assistant director at the Leipzig Opera and dramaturge for the MDR symphony orchestra and choirs.

Maximilian Winkler studied church music, musicology and Jewish studies. His work focuses on the music of German Jewry and the history and present of radio. He is also a journalist for radio and newspapers and continues to work as a church musician.
