Grabsteine erzählen Geschichte(n)

Cemeteries tell us stories of people from a bygone era. The cemeteries in front of Hallesches Tor are home to a number of personalities from the worlds of politics, culture and science whose lives are still of interest to us today.

Henriette Herz and Rahel Varnhagen, two great salon ladies from the Romantic era, are buried here. An Austrian prince, who voluntarily renounced his aristocratic privileges, rests within sight of GDR opposition activist Wolfgang Harich. A visit to Fanny Hensel, who dared to compose and make music as a woman in conservative times, is a must on our tour of the cemetery, as is a visit to the Kreuzberg artist-poet Kurt Mühlenhaupt.
