The duo Blue Valentine has interwoven love letters from around nine centuries with their own compositions to create an enchanting evening.
The love letter is considered one of the most yearning genres in literature - and has been for centuries. Exuberant, dreamy or sorrowful lines tell of the pain of wanting to be together and not being able to be together. Letters from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, in which famous personalities reveal their innermost feelings, are testimony to the diversity of what is probably the greatest emotion in the world. Héloïse writes to Abaelard (around 1133), King Henry to Gabrielle d'Estrées (around 1595), Zelda Sayre to F. Scott Fitzgerald (1919) and Frida Kahlo to Alejandro Gómez Arias (between 1925 and 1927) - just some of the letters that are used in the piece.
The music of Blue Valentine, consisting of the actress and singer Kristin Theresa Scheinhütte and the musician Michel Lohmann, is just as diverse. In a total of twelve specially composed pieces - chansons, rock ballads and indie pop songs inspired by the texts of the love letters - the duo ignite a musical and poetic firework display of great emotion with titles such as "The Dress", "Unfair", "Under Our Tree" and "Bleeding Out".
