When the young trans woman Ella sets off for a party in her most beautiful dress, she is beaten to death by a group of young men in a subway station. In her grief, her best friend Marianne retreats to a lonely hut by the sea and turns to an artificial intelligence and the sea in search of support.
How do we go on living when someone who has carried us dies? And what does it say about our time when an AI understands our grief better than the world around us?
What the audience experiences as a theater evening is the result of a radical self-experiment: artist Paul Marianne Furtwängler isolates herself for seven days in a hut by the sea and speaks exclusively with an AI. The result is an intimate evening of theater about grief, queerness and the search for support in a world that contributes to this lack of support.
The no-budget production brings stage artist Paul Marianne Furtwängler together again with choreographer Tomas Bünger. Following their first collaboration, they are continuing their cross-generational dialog and creating space for queer perspectives on stage. The project is a direct artistic reaction to the increasing violence against trans people and becomes a ritual of remembrance for a loved one.
Tomas Bünger, a long-standing member of the Bremer Tanztheater (with Susanne Linke, Urs Dietrich and Reinhild Hoffmann, among others), has worked internationally for many years, including in Bangladesh and India. Also on stage is actor Moritz Bock as Ella.
All ticket proceeds go directly towards financing the production. We would like to thank all the people whose donations make this work possible, as well as the Alpine Fellowship Foundation for their support.
Donations to enable us to pay the people involved in the project fairly are very welcome on gofundme.
