"What happens if you lend Hitler his only winter coat?"
MY FIGHT
A farce by George Tabori
Translation: Ursula Grützmacher-Tabori
Vienna, beginning of the 20th century.
A young man arrives with big dreams - and an empty stomach.
He wants to become an artist - and is rejected ...
At the homeless shelter, he meets the Jewish bookseller Shlomo Herzl, a warm-hearted, eloquent dreamer. Herzl takes the awkward newcomer by the hand, shapes his appearance, teaches him rhetorical tricks - and lends him his only winter coat, a kind of care from strangers that he was unfamiliar with.
But well-intentioned help turns into something completely different: a naive artist becomes a demagogue, a manuscript becomes a weapon, and even the smallest gestures have fatal consequences.
With black humor, grotesque moments and surprising irony, Tabori shows how people influence each other - and how the smallest actions can have great effects. You laugh at the absurdity - and the next moment your breath catches.
A bitterly funny, entertaining play about ideology, manipulation and human influences - more topical than ever.
