Latin American soundscapes between tradition and renewal

The Colombian Senase Trio is the formation of siblings Natalia, Sebastián and Sergio Castrillón, who embark on a fascinating journey of sound with harp, cellos and vocals. They were born in Manizales, a town in central Colombia in the department of Caldas, which is famous for its coffee cultivation and lies within sight of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano.
Inspired by elements of global soundscapes and classical and improvised music, they play original compositions developed together with elements of Latin American folk: the traditional meets the experimental!

Natalia is a versatile and sought-after harpist, singer and composer whose musical roots lie in traditional Latin American music as well as in classical and experimental improvised music. She crosses genre boundaries with her own personal style of playing, combining innovative, percussive techniques with more traditional harp playing. In addition to her harp playing, Natalia Castrillón is also an accomplished singer. Her vocal style is soulful and expressive, often conveying deep emotions and stories through her music. While her own compositions use vocal lines as melodies, her repertoire also includes traditional Colombian songs that deal with themes such as love, loss and longing, as well as social problems and stories about the relationship between man and nature, taking listeners on a journey through the different regions of Colombia.

Sebastian was born in Manizales in 1993 and began his cello studies at the age of 10 with his brother Sergio Castrillón. He completed his basic musical training at the Universidad de Caldas with Andriana Marín, Jorge Camelo and Ángela Osorio. He then studied at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia under the direction of Diego García, graduating with a master's degree in music, specializing in cello. He has attended master classes with professors from the USA, France, Hungary and Germany. He has played for several years as solo cellist of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Caldas and first cellist of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Caldas. In 2014, he toured Catalonia/Spain with the Symphony Orchestra of the Conservatory of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, where he performed works by Haydn, Vivaldi, Rossini, Rachmaninoff and Shostakovich as a soloist. His interests as a cellist range from classical and contemporary academic music to various contemporary sound manifestations such as electro-acoustic music, rock, jazz and free improvisation.

Sergio is a musician, composer, curator and educator specializing in multidisciplinary sound research and one of the leading figures of the experimental music scene in Finland. In recent years his work has focused on collaborations in the fields of sound art, performance, contemporary dance, theater, poetry, sound poetry and visual arts. Intimate, expressive, emotional, dramatic, intuitive, powerful and sensitive - all words that describe the range of his unique performance style. His musical work began in 2000 with a combination of cello, chamber music and improvisation courses in Colombia. He currently works as a lecturer in the Global Music Department of the Sibelius Academy (Helsinki University of the Arts), where he teaches Transcultural Ensemble Playing and Interdisciplinary Improvisation. He is also a tutor for artistic and academic work in the fields of composition, improvisation, performance and artistic identity for bachelor and master students as well as for PhD students. In recent years, he has taught as a guest lecturer at music institutions in Europe and South America, including the Oslo Academy of Music, Estonian Academy of Music and Theater, Tartu Heino Eller Academy, University of Basel, FLUSS Austria, Universidad de Caldas, Universidad de los Andes, Universidad Javeriana, Conservatori del Liceu Barcelona, ESMUC Barcelona, Conservatorio de Gran Canaria, Latvian Conservatory and Jazz Academy Lithuania.
In 2019 he completed his PhD at Helsinki University on the topic: New direction in the timbres of contemporary cello repertoire: analysis of works by Colombian composers from 2000 to 2015. In addition, he worked intensively on the topic 'Imperial history - decolonized exchange: research with and through music'.

The Senase Trio will be performing their current program of new Latin American pieces for the first time in Germany at Klangkosmos NRW.
