At the beginning of the 20th century, St. George's was a place where miracles were part of everyday life: People talk to saints, walk on water, whistle stones in two. But the new age is approaching. When Ulysses, who was thought to be dead, returns after fifteen years, order, faith and memory are shaken.

"Pentecost. Memories of the End of the World" is a novel that plays with the motifs of magical realism.

Hlauco tells a polyphonic story of a world on the threshold of modernity, of language, transformation and the moment when an end becomes a beginning. In St. Georg, the mystical and the mechanical meet, the old miracles still work - but no one knows for how long.

Miroslav Hlauco follows what happens when Franz Rechnitz, a young imperial and royal notary, arrives in the village and wants to lead St. Georg "properly" into the new century with a love of detail and subtle, sometimes dry humor.

Pfingsten was awarded the most important Czech literary prize Magnesia Litera twice in 2025 - as "Book of the Year" and "Debut of the Year" - and was published in the run-up to the Czech Republic's Guest of Honour appearance at the 2026 Frankfurt Book Fair. Awarded: Magnesia Litera, 2025
