Nussaibah Younis: »Fundamentalös«

What do you get when you mix heartbreak, IS, radicalization, Iraq, London, a queer protagonist and a good dose of humour? Quite simply: a successful novel. Nussabiah Younis' novel Fundamentalös achieves a unique balancing act between seemingly irreconcilable themes. Nadia, the queer British-Iraqi protagonist with a heartache, hastily moves to Iraq, where she works in a United Nations deradicalization programme for women who have joined the IS. Between absurd alliances, a lot of bureaucracy and a potentially, well, explosive relationship with former IS bride Sara, the novel explores the boundaries of help and belonging with a lot of humor. Salon host Lida Shams-Mostofi asks about the difference between commitment and self-deception and who is actually trying to save whom. Claudia Urbschat-Mingues, dubbing voice of Angelina Jolie, will provide the German passages.
