A sociologist and a politician meet. The sociologist: a scientist, born in East Germany when the Wall was still standing. The politician: a pragmatist, born in West Germany in the post-reunification era. Steffen Mau and Ricarda Lang may have different biographies, but they share a profound interest in the structure, challenges and opportunities of our society. Mau teaches as a professor of macrosociology at the HU Berlin, Lang is a member of the German Bundestag for Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen. TheGreat Upheaval is a conversation that has become a book. A dialog about the really big questions of our time: How can democracy be strengthened and maintained? How can social discourse free itself from the mechanisms of affect politics? What reforms are urgently needed and why? And what does it take to (re)establish collective confidence despite multiple crises? Salon host Mariel Reichard and her two guests venture to find answers.
