Overseas Quartet

JA!ZZevau meets Kammgarn

The Overseas Quartet around the American bassist Patrick Atwater and the Kaiserslautern pianist Philipp Huchzermeier was formed at the beginning of 2019 and celebrated its first German tour in the same year with great success. The band's concept is not new, but musically all the more exciting: Atwater and Huchzermeier compose the pieces collaboratively from a distance. The music reflects what the two have in common - a love of (jazz) music in all its facets.

They are supported by saxophonist Max Kohns and drummer Dominik Schmitt. During their first intensive work phase in May 2019, the band developed their very own sound, which focuses on groove-oriented, modern jazz. At the same time, the connection to traditional elements remains just as audible as the pronounced love of melody. This complexity is largely due to the different musical backgrounds of the band members. Patrick Atwater, who has performed on stage in the USA with international greats such as Jeff Coffin and taught at the renowned Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) in Nashville, is one of the up-and-coming voices on the American jazz scene. He is also a sought-after studio musician and has been involved in numerous bluegrass and pop productions in his home town of Nashville. Philipp Huchzermeier, who met Atwater in 2012 while studying at the University of Northern Colorado, is active as a composer and pianist in numerous formations in southwest and northern Germany. His musical work moves between traditional jazz, fusion, funk, soul and electronic music. The connection to Max Kohns and Dominik Schmitt came about through joint activities in the southwest German big band scene. Kohns not only impresses as an outstanding lead alto saxophonist, but also as a highly creative tenor and soprano saxophonist. Dominik Schmitt's drumming forms an equally creative and essential foundation for the band. The musician, who lives in Osnabrück, has been a sought-after jazz drummer for many years and has also made a name for himself in numerous rock formations thanks to his expressive playing style.
