This musical project tells the story of Spanish women writers, dancers, composers, guitarists and singers, both in flamenco and classical music. There are real treasures to be found in their works, which we bring back to life in this 90-minute concert.
After our enthusiastically received program about the life of Federico García Lorca, who used his art to fight for the rights of Spanish women, this new event focuses on the art of these women themselves.
We present compositions by the Spanish mezzo-soprano and composer Pauline Viardot-García (1821-1910), who became famous throughout Europe and organized salons in Paris in which composers such as Chopin and Liszt performed. A little later, María Rodrigo Bellido (1888-1967) was the first woman to write a Spanish opera, which is still performed today. The composer and pianist Emiliana Zubeldía (1888-1987), who published a song album with melodies based on flamenco, comes from the same generation. We also interpret Letras by the legendary cantaora Niña de los Peines, whose voice revolutionized flamenco. These pieces are also accompanied by flamenco dance.
These artists created female characters with character, humor and independence, far from the traditional roles of faithful lover, flirtatious seductress or maid. Their flamenco songs celebrate strength, pride and freedom instead of suffering and submission. During the concert, we will experience how these extraordinary women have given Spanish art a new, feminine face.
