QUEERHISTORYMONTH
QueerHistoryMonth will take place in Hamburg from May 1 to 31, 2026(www.queerhistoryhamburg.de). Various events as part of the festival will bring the history(ies) of the queer community in Hamburg to life. Everyone is welcome - kings, queers, queens, allies, friends, families (of choice) and everyone in between and beyond!
The event
A pictorial journey through the life of the transgender St. Paulian Julia Böhmer (1938-2023). This lecture is about a "silent chapter" of the district's history: It is about the memory of those people who created, used and shaped disappeared and forgotten places of queer St. Pauli history from the 1950s to the 2020s and gave the district its queer facet.
In this illustrated lecture, Eva Decker introduces Julia Böhmer and talks about her own research into queer history and trans history in St. Pauli. She knew Julia personally, accompanied her in the last years of her life and was commissioned by Julia to publish her story.
Julia Böhmer is thus representative of a generation of trans people who lived in Germany from the 1950s to the 2020s. In this way, we learn more about this generation and contemporary history in Germany - and Hamburg in particular.
Eva Decker shows unique insights: photos of Julia Böhmer, costume jewelry, personal items and other significant objects that paint a vivid picture of her life. Anyone interested is cordially invited to get to know Julia Böhmer and immerse themselves in the exciting story of her time in St. Pauli.
This event is part of a three-part series on Julia Böhmer and queer history in St. Pauli.
All three events can be attended independently of each other - each one offers an independent, exciting and informative approach to the topic. At the same time, the formats build on each other in terms of content and together open up in-depth perspectives on queer history and memory.
