Lidia grows up in Oregon in the 1970s in an environment characterized by violence and alcohol. As a talented swimmer, she seeks refuge in the water, but pain and self-destruction also accompany her on land. It was only through writing that she began to appropriate her own story and transform experiences of injury and loss into language. In her deeply feminist directorial debut, Kristen Stewart liberates the autobiographical story of writer and swimmer Lidia Yuknavitch from the conventions of the classic biopic. Instead of a linear life story, the film tells a fragmented tale of female self-empowerment from the subjective perspective of its main character. Despite its intensity, the well thought-out visual and sound design lends the film a great poetic beauty. A film that really is "a stunner" and tells a different and exciting story - physical, intimate and intense.
