Von Vergänglichkeit & Zauber • Sarah Maria Sun / Jörg Widmann / NDR Radiophilharmonie

In the organizer's words:

Jörg Widmann is a tireless explorer - composer, conductor and clarinettist. In this concert, he conducts the NDR Radiophilharmonie and also includes his composition Versuch über die Fuge in the version for soprano, oboe and chamber orchestra in the program.

In this lively work, he turns, mirrors and interweaves musical themes and sets verses by the preacher Solomon to music that reflect on transience and futility. Widmann develops his own musical form from these texts: Breath, lines and rhythmic structures become a clear musical whole. At the center is soprano Sarah Maria Sun, whose radiant and expressive soprano brings the verses of Ecclesiastes to life. Closely interwoven with the orchestra and in dialog with the oboe, which forms her musical alter ego, the soprano transforms the music into a gripping, highly emotional experience.

The evening opens with Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's String Symphony in B minor, which the composer wrote as a 14-year-old and which impresses Jörg Widmann due to the astonishing maturity of the work. The concert concludes with Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Serenade op. 39, a work full of warmth and elegance, born out of a longing for a lost homeland. Widmann describes it simply as "full of glittering magic".
