Film, lecture & panel discussion with Christian Eldagsen
Rising rents, displacement and gentrification characterize everyday life in cities. At the same time, we are experiencing land grabbing, environmental destruction and exploitation worldwide, especially in the Global South. What do these developments have to do with each other? Who actually owns the city and the countryside - and who should own them?
The film "The Guardians of Property" (34 min.) deals with the historical emergence of the modern private property system and the associated foundations of capitalism. Three clowns negotiate these topics in a humorous and vivid way in a circus ring and trace the common thread from privatization and land theft to the present day.
In the subsequent lecture "The Sultan is thirsty", Christian Eldagsen uses the means of political cabaret to guide us through the history of the great land theft of the 15th and 16th centuries up to today's developments such as gentrification in our cities and the burning rainforests of the Amazon. The lecture makes it clear that land grabbing and gentrification are two sides of the same principle and exposes the rhetoric and interpretations that conceal and drive these processes.
An open and lively discussion with the audience is planned at the end.
Christian Eldagsen combines political analysis with humor and entertainment, because enlightenment can also be fun and make you laugh. Further information can be found at www.wemgehoertdiestadtwemgehoertdasland.de.
