A workshop on soil - usually little noticed, but the basis of human life.
We walk on it, build our houses on it and use it for agriculture and forestry - in short: we live on and from it. We are talking about the soil, of course. Without it, there would be no human life as we know it. At the same time, soil also serves as an indispensable habitat for animals and plants.
The diversity of soil types is impressive and shows numerous variations and transitional forms. There are young and old soils, some only a few centimetres thick, others several meters thick. Their development is an interplay of rock, water, air and living organisms and is one of the most complex ecosystems on earth. More organisms live in a handful of healthy soil than there are people in the world!
But soil cannot be reproduced and environmental pollution, sealing and incorrect cultivation are increasingly affecting it.
In our workshop, we want to address these issues by collecting soil samples in the Spreepark, examining them under a stereo microscope, observing and identifying the soil life hidden in them, carrying out experiments and demonstrating the formation of soil.
