Awareness of the horrors of the Holocaust is fading - in curricula, in public discourse and in our daily interactions. At the same time, we are experiencing a frightening increase in anti-Semitic violence. Eva Umlauf, one of the last contemporary witnesses and Auschwitz survivors, is furious about this development. In her new book, she clearly identifies where politics and society are failing and why we must not give the authoritarian forces in our country any more space.

Her appeal is a wake-up call at a time when "Never again!" often threatens to degenerate into an empty formula. But despite all the justified anger, Eva Umlauf carries a deep confidence within her: the hope that Jewish life in Germany will be possible again in the future without fear.

Eva Umlauf, born in Slovakia, is one of the youngest survivors of the Auschwitz concentration camp. As a pediatrician and psychotherapist, she has spent decades promoting healing. She has been President of the International Auschwitz Committee since May 2025, succeeding Marian Turski. As one of the most prominent contemporary witnesses of the Shoah, she gives a voice to those who can no longer speak.
