A village in Anatolia, Turkey. Young Shirin is to be married off against her will. She flees to Cologne. As a "guest worker", she tries to gain a foothold in Germany between factory work, hostels and dance bars for "guest workers". She meets a man she trusts without knowing who she is getting involved with. On the sound level, filmmaker Helma Sanders-Brahms and Shirin enter into a dialog. Power relations are negotiated between narrative rapprochement and apportioning blame. The film is considered to be the first to be told from the perspective of a female "guest worker".
