Two peasants are sent to war by royal envoys. As soldiers, they send their wives postcards with pictures of conquered countries, works of art and sights. Their reward: worthless medals from the now bankrupt kingdom and a suitcase full of postcards. Les Carabiniers is not a nouveau romance film in the strictest sense, but it approaches its narrative premises. The film replaces the illusion of narrative war films with a sequence of images that do not engage the audience emotionally, but instead refer to the mechanisms of cinematic representation.
