Späti-Vortrag und Kiez-Führung - WZB in deinem Kiez: Noch immer Ungleichheiten zwischen Ost und West?

How have social differences between East and West in Berlin and Germany changed since reunification? Where are inequalities still particularly evident today - and what does research say about this? And what was it actually like during the division of Germany in Berlin, especially in the Mitte district?
The kick-off event on Tuesday, May 5, 2026 of the series "WZB in Your Neighborhood: Social Sciences Meet Urban Neighborhood Culture in Berlin" is dedicated to these questions. The starting point is the scientific examination of social inequality, which is also visible in Berlin's urban space - especially with regard to developments between East and West, the after-effects of historical dividing lines and current social dynamics. The aim of the event series is to combine research on social inequality with everyday urban culture in Berlin and to make topics such as migration, gentrification and social participation accessible in a low-threshold, local format.
The evening consists of a thematic lecture in a Kiez-Späti by WZB President Nicola Fuchs-Schündeln and a guided tour through the Kiez-Untergrund with Berliner Unterwelten e.V. In this way, research and urban exploration are combined - close to the topics, close to the place and open to exchange with the neighborhood.
Together with the participants, we would like to discuss how inequalities are manifested in Berlin today, which historical traces reach into the present and which perspectives for a fairer coexistence in the neighborhood are conceivable. We look forward to a lively exchange.

The event series "WZB in your neighborhood" consists of three events in May and June and is aimed at all interested parties; the event language is German.
