In their debut feature-length film, the Cologne-based filmmakers locate the mythological figure of the mermaid in what is now the USA, where she still shapes an entire subculture today: the "merfolk". Shot on grainy 16mm material, the elaborate, magically sparkling make-up and costume design of the main character "Una" complement this stylistically and dramaturgically hybrid film on an aesthetic level. Fictional elements in the style of the 80s hit Splash merge seamlessly with documentary observations of activists, blurring fiction and reality in the truest sense of the word. A hypnotic cinematic experience for all mermaids and those who want to become one.

Miri Ian Gossing and Lina Sieckmann are not only firmly anchored in the local film scene with their artistic work, they are also shaping Cologne's queer subculture with the "Blonde Cobra" film festival, which they co-founded in 2019. We are particularly pleased to welcome these filmmakers and festival colleagues to our festival!
