Berlin 1930 is a garishly glittering sea of bars, studios, bizarre vaudevilles and erotic temples of pleasure. Advertising copywriter Jakob Fabian willingly drifts through it every night, but unlike his ambitious and left-wing politically committed friend Labude, he observes the immediate coexistence of noise-driven hustle and bustle, social misery and escalating, politically motivated disputes on the open street from a distance. During one of his forays, he meets Cornelia and the two fall in love. Fabian is suddenly seized by a thirst for action, but his happiness between day and dream is short-lived: he loses his job, Cornelia turns her back on him and his best friend Labude takes his own life.
Erich Kästner's big city novel from 1931, the uncensored original version of which, "Der Gang vor die Hunde", was published in 2013, depicts the heated atmosphere of a time of crisis on the eve of a fatal political upheaval. In 1933, the book ended up in the flames of the Nazi book burnings.
Note: In the tjg. production, the audience sits on a moving revolving stage.
